# Pergola FAQ

Common questions answered

Buying a pergola is a significant investment. We get asked the same questions regularly - about costs, materials, installation, permits and maintenance. This page collects the most common ones with straight answers.

If your question isn't here, [contact us directly](https://wa.me/97143797844?text=Hi%2C%20I%27m%20interested%20in%20a%20pergola.%20Can%20you%20help%20me%20with%20pricing%20and%20options%3F) and we'll answer it honestly.

## Prices And Quotes

How much does a pergola cost in Dubai?

Pergola prices in Dubai range from AED 8,000 for a 3x3m entry-level fixed fabric structure to AED 60,000+ for a large multi-module bioclimatic system, excluding 5% VAT. Installation, accessories, and a concrete foundation where one is needed, are charged separately on top. The type of pergola is the primary cost driver - our five products cover the full range from the [Sama fixed fabric pergola](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sama/) at the entry point through to the [Sierra bioclimatic motorised system](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) at the premium end. For a detailed breakdown by product type, see our [pergola cost guide](https://shadingoasis.com/how-much-does-a-pergola-cost-in-dubai/) .

What affects the price of a pergola?

Several factors influence the final price beyond the base product: size and number of modules (larger spans and multi-module configurations increase both materials and installation time); number of posts (a wall-mounted single-post installation costs less than a freestanding four-post structure requiring concrete groundwork); powder coating finish (standard colours such as white, anthracite and grey are included in base pricing - wood effect powder coating adds approximately 40% to the profile cost); add-ons (ceiling fans, LED lighting integrated into the frame, outdoor blinds and rain or wind sensors each add to the final price - these are significantly cheaper to integrate during installation than to retrofit later); and site conditions (rooftop access, elevated structures, difficult ground conditions or significant concrete work add time and cost).

Is installation included in the price?

No. Our prices are for the pergola itself, and installation is always quoted as a separate line so you can see exactly what you are paying for. Accessories such as lighting, fans and blinds are also charged separately, and if your site needs a concrete foundation for the posts, that is quoted after the site visit. Installation itself is not optional - correct fixing, structural integrity and warranty coverage all depend on our team completing it to the required standard, and every installation is backed by our 5-year warranty.

Do you offer supply only without installation?

No. Installation is priced separately, but every pergola we supply is installed by our own team. The fixing specification and 5-year warranty are tied to the installation - supply-only would not allow us to stand behind the product in the same way. If you are looking for supply only, we are not the right fit and would rather be upfront about that than take on a project we cannot warranty properly.

Is the site visit and quote free?

Yes. We visit your home, measure the space, check the walls and ground the pergola will be fixed to, and then send you a quote. There is no charge and no obligation. [Book a site visit](https://shadingoasis.com/contact/) .

What are your payment terms?

A 50% deposit confirms the order and starts manufacturing. The balance is due before installation.

## Choosing A Pergola

Which pergola keeps the rain out?

Two of our five: the [Sierra](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) keeps rain out when its louvres are closed, and the [Nimbus](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/nimbus/) has a fully waterproof roof. The [Liwa](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/liwa/) , [Wave](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/wave/) and [Sama](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sama/) are built for shade - they are not rain-proof. Our [pergola comparison table](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/#compare) shows all five side by side.

What is the difference between a bioclimatic, fixed roof and fabric pergola?

It comes down to the roof. A bioclimatic pergola ([Sierra](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) ) has motorised aluminium louvres you can tilt for shade and airflow, or close against rain. A fixed roof pergola is permanent cover with no moving parts - either overlapping aluminium louvres for shade and airflow ([Liwa](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/liwa/) ) or a solid waterproof roof ([Nimbus](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/nimbus/) ). A fabric pergola uses a shade fabric canopy - retractable on the [Wave](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/wave/) , fixed on the [Sama](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sama/) - and is usually the most cost-effective. Our guide on [how to choose the right pergola](https://shadingoasis.com/how-to-choose-the-right-pergola-for-your-uae-home/) goes through which suits which home.

Do you make wooden or WPC pergolas?

No - we only work with aluminium. It is more durable in the UAE climate and needs far less maintenance than wood. If you like the look of timber, our frames are available in a wood-effect powder coating, so you get the look of wood with the durability and low maintenance of aluminium.

Can a pergola be used as a carport?

Yes. A pergola makes a good carport, keeping the sun off your car and its interior. We have built a [Sierra carport in Jumeirah Golf Estates](https://shadingoasis.com/projects/sierra-pergola-installed-in-jumeirah-golf-estates-carport/) . We plan the posts around your driveway so they stay clear of car doors and turning space.

Wall-mounted or freestanding - which do I need?

A wall-mounted pergola is fixed to your house wall on one side, so it needs fewer posts and usually costs less. A freestanding pergola stands on its own posts, which suits gardens, pool decks and spaces away from the house. Some of our systems can also be fitted between two walls. We check the wall and ground at the site visit and recommend the option that works for your space.

What is the biggest pergola you can build?

Our pergolas are built in modules that join side by side, so there is no practical limit on length - 20 metres or more is possible. Projection (how far the pergola reaches out from the wall) is normally up to around 6 metres, and larger is possible depending on the system. We confirm what works for your space at the site visit.

## UAE Weather

What should I do in strong wind or a storm?

Very little. If you have a [Sierra](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) , close the louvres - you can do this from the Somfy TaHoma app even when you are away from home. If you have a fabric canopy such as the [Wave](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/wave/) , retract it so the fabric is not spread across the frame. That is all we advise. We also [monitor UAE weather warnings](https://shadingoasis.com/how-we-monitor-uae-weather-for-your-pergola/) and let our customers know ahead of forecast high winds and rain.

How does a pergola cope with UAE heat, sun and sand?

Our frames are powder-coated aluminium, which does not rot, rust or warp in the heat. Fabric pergolas use solution-dyed acrylic fabric made for strong sun. Sand and dust settle on any outdoor structure, so a regular rinse keeps it looking new. Our article on [why pergolas fail in the UAE](https://shadingoasis.com/why-pergolas-fail-in-the-uae-and-what-to-look-for-before-you-buy/) explains what to check so a pergola lasts in this climate.

Will a pergola make my outdoor area cooler?

Shade makes a big difference: it keeps direct sun off you, your floor and your furniture, so the space stays much more comfortable. Louvred pergolas such as the [Sierra](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) and [Liwa](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/liwa/) also let hot air escape through the roof. For extra comfort, ceiling fans can be added.

## Installation

How long does it take from order to installation?

Normally around 4 to 5 weeks from order, depending on how busy our installation team is. Every pergola is made to order in the UAE. If your community needs approval before installation, allow around a week for that too - see [do you need a permit for a pergola in Dubai](https://shadingoasis.com/do-you-need-a-permit-for-a-pergola-in-dubai/) .

How long does installation take?

Normally 2 to 3 days, depending on the size and complexity of the pergola. Larger pergolas can take longer - we confirm the timing when we book your installation.

Do I need a concrete foundation?

On the ground floor, yes - including gardens and tiled patios, the posts are fixed to a normal concrete foundation, which we quote after the site visit. A roof terrace, balcony or other upper floor is different: a foundation or ballast adds weight to the building, so the structure must be checked by a structural engineer before installation. The property owner needs to arrange that check.

Do you install outside Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

Yes, we install across all seven emirates. Our showrooms are in Dubai (Al Quoz) and Abu Dhabi (Musaffah) - see [pergolas in Abu Dhabi](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas-abu-dhabi/) and [our locations](https://shadingoasis.com/contact/) .

Do I need approval from my community or developer?

In most managed communities, yes - for example Emaar, Dubai Holding, Tilal Al Ghaf, Al Furjan and Damac. We prepare the scope of work, drawings and documents, and guide you through the submission. Approval usually takes around a week. Our article [do you need a permit for a pergola in Dubai](https://shadingoasis.com/do-you-need-a-permit-for-a-pergola-in-dubai/) covers the process and typical costs.

## Warranty And Care

What does the 5-year warranty cover?

Manufacturing defects in the product. The warranty applies because our own team installs every pergola we supply.

How do I look after my pergola?

Very easily - it is aluminium. Brush off the dust and wash it down with water, without detergent. There is no painting, oiling or treating like a wooden pergola needs.

Can I add lights, screens or fans later?

In most cases, yes. It is cheaper and neater to include them when the pergola is installed, so if you think you might want them, mention it at the site visit.

Can I control my pergola from my phone or smart home?

Yes, on motorised pergolas. The [Sierra](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/sierra/) uses Somfy motors, so you can control it from a remote or the Somfy TaHoma app, and connect it to systems such as Alexa, Google Home or Home Assistant. A motorised [Wave](https://shadingoasis.com/pergolas/wave/) also uses Somfy. See [connecting your pergola to home automation](https://shadingoasis.com/connecting-your-pergola-to-home-automation/) .
