We monitor UAE National Center of Meteorology alerts as a standard part of how we operate, and we send out warnings to our own customers ahead of forecast high winds and heavy rain. It's not a marketing feature we bolted on - it comes directly from being the company that gets called after a storm to repair or replace someone else's failed installation, and wanting to give our own customers a chance to act before the weather arrives, not after.

Why This Matters More For Some Structures Than Others

Not every piece of outdoor shading faces the same risk in a storm. A pergola with correctly specified posts and fixings and an engineered roof system is built to stay put under sustained wind load - that's the entire point of the engineering work covered in our guide to why pergolas fail.

Umbrellas and fabric awnings are a different story. Lighter frames, larger unsupported fabric spans, and less anchoring mean they're inherently more exposed to wind. If you have umbrellas or awnings alongside a pergola on the same property, they're usually the first thing worth closing, retracting, or securing when a warning comes through - the pergola itself is the least of your concerns.

For Sierra owners, weather warnings don't require being on site. The Somfy TaHoma app lets you close the louvres remotely from anywhere - useful if a warning comes in while you're at work, travelling, or simply not near the controller. Rain sensors can also be integrated to close the louvres automatically, but the app gives you a manual option the moment a forecast changes, rather than waiting for the sensor to react to rain that's already started.
